Digitization
- Currently: 15500+ ads digitized.
- Some as early as 1950's, a majority from 1980's and on
- Originals were VHS recorded from TV
- iMovie used to capture, with a Canopus DAC box
- .dv files for masters
Pros:- easy
- good for editing/sampling
Cons:- lossy
- future as a format?
- H.264 .mp4 files for web playback (used to use quicktime, moving to flash)
Storage
- Files occupy 1.5 TB on a 3.5 TB Apple Raid array
- Filenames identify company and year.
- Initially metadata was stored in a Filemaker Pro DB, and 2400 coded ads were presented through a web interface.
- Currently developing the next version of the database, with a web interface to allow for more distributed coding
Metadata/Annotation
- We've found limited options for simple, local, integrated media annotation
- Recently begun using Frameline 47, which allows for saving mpeg 7 metadata in video file
- Integrated, so movie clip plays next to annotation fields
- Automatic Scene Detection
- Segemented annotation
- SQLite storage
- Multiple format export, inc. XML
- Mix of controlled vocabulary and open freeform tagging for simple sections
- Full transcription of vioceover and textual data
